Heavy Vehicle Recovery Driver (HGV Class 1)

Job Type: Full-time

Licence/Certification:

  • Class 1 (Category CE) minimum required
  • Current CPC Driver Card required
  • Tacho Card required

Experience:

  • At least 1-year of commercial experience driving Class 1 vehicles.
  • Recovery experience preferred. However, we also train non-experienced applicants.

Requirements:

  • Pass DBS/Police Vetting

We are required to carry out a DBS check (formerly CRB check)  to ensure employees are not barred from carrying out duties associated with this role. If this concerns you, please ask for more information.

Role/Duties:

Location: You would be based at our depot which is located near Wallisdown in Poole, Dorset. Due to the “on-call” requirement, applicants must live in the Bournemouth/Poole area.

Working hours: As well as a standard working week, you will be required to be on call for nights & weekends as part of a rolling roster. Applicants must be prepared to work overtime at short notice.

Salary: Salary is competitive for the industry, and overtime is paid.

About Bourne Transport

Bourne Transport is an established vehicle recovery company based in Poole, Dorset. Clients include police, ambulance & fire services, private customers, councils, truck, bus & coach operators, major motoring organisations, and franchised truck & bus dealerships.

We operate mainly in the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch conurbation, recovering vehicles to wherever they need to go, countrywide.

The Vehicle Recovery Driver Role

Potential applicants must be physically fit, prepared to work in all weather conditions, be self-motivated and be able to work on their own initiative. The ability to keep accurate records is essential.

Key attributes include:

  • Ability to use initiative to resolve challenging situations
  • Quality and Health & Safety awareness
  • A willingness to work antisocial hours in all weathers
  • A practical and considered approach to problems
  • To be able to work without supervision 
  • To be able to work as part of a team when required

These positions may suit those with mechanical knowledge that would like to move into the recovery industry.

Be aware that the recovery operative role can be very demanding, you will be challenged by the work environment.

Recovery drivers often have to interact with people in extremely stressful circumstances. They must be able to communicate effectively and be able to take control of situations while remaining safe, calm, and polite.

The work is rewarding, varied, and interesting. Depending on your qualifications and level of training, it could include:

  • Recovery via suspended tow of trucks and buses of all sizes both locally and around the UK.
  • Roadside recovery of broken-down heavy, light commercial, and private vehicles using appropriate equipment
  • Winching, including off-road winching, of all vehicle types.
  • Recovering vehicles involved in major or minor accidents
  • Recovering vehicles involved in crime

You will be required to confidently and carefully drive a variety of vehicles.

Training in the safe use of our equipment will be provided.
